Ford government ramming through Peel break-up unfair to residents: NDP

The government is skipping over public consultation in Peel dissolution

QUEEN’S PARK — Jeff Burch, NDP critic for Municipal Affairs, issued the following statement in response to the Ford government’s decision to use a time-allocation motion to ram through Bill 112, its Peel Dissolution legislation, bypassing committee hearings and public consultation:

“People in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon deserve a fair, thoughtful and transparent process for the dissolution of Peel Region — the dissolution is unprecedented, and it needs to be done right.

Instead, the Ford government is serving its classic move: ramming through legislation without proper public consultation.

Dismantling Peel without taking time to consult raises red flags for the NDP, including:

  • It fails to consult Peel Region residents
  • It fails to hear from municipal workers whose jobs may be at stake
  • It fails to ensure the voices of each municipality are represented fairly on the Transition Board.
  • It doesn’t provide for any transparency or accountability in how decisions are made

We’ll continue to push for the interests of people in Peel to be protected, for public services to remain public and for a process that’s fair and transparent.”
