KITCHENER – Marit Stiles, Leader of the Official Opposition NDP was in Kitchener Centre today calling on Ford’s Conservative government to finally prioritize two-way, all-day GO service between Kitchener-Waterloo and Toronto.
"Kitchener-Waterloo has waited long enough for fast and reliable transit in and around the region,” said Stiles. “Reliable GO transit is a clear next step to helping students, commuters, residents, and visitors move between Kitchener and Toronto, and continue to help it grow.”
On Wednesday, Stiles and the NDP tabled a motion calling for a clear timeline and firm funding commitment for expanded, two-way, all-day GO train service. Doug Ford and the Conservatives voted it down, once again failing on their transit commitments and literally leaving the people of Kitchener-Waterloo behind.
“Two-way, all-day GO service is of huge importance to the Kitchener community,” said Debbie Chapman, NDP candidate for Kitchener Centre. “It’s always been part of the conversation for better transit during my years at Kitchener city hall. As I’ve been knocking on doors and listening to the community, I’m hearing about it even more. I’m excited to get to Queen’s Park and join the Official Opposition NDP’s exciting advocacy to make it happen.”
MPP Catherine Fife (Waterloo) has been advocating for expanded service between the two cities for a decade now, as both previous Liberal and Conservative governments have failed to deliver on the growing needs of the region.
“Expanded GO service is long overdue for the fast-growing Kitchener-Waterloo region,” said Fife. “It's what the community needs and have been advocating for, and we’ll fight alongside them until this government sits up and takes notice.”
“I can’t wait for Debbie to join the NDP team at Queen’s Park. Only the Official Opposition can stand up to Ford. Together, we can win more for Kitchener-Waterloo.” said Fife.
